This is from the opening credits of the movie and shows a
mosque and shows Muslims praying in this shot. This was used to show that the
virus came from an Islamic country, however this has been used to capture the
zeitgeist of two of our present-day fears: terrorism (including the Twins
Towers attack) and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; and killer viruses, (such
as swine flu and bird flu) and the fact of pandemic.
This scene links into the context of America in 2004, and is
used to show this could happen and link zombies into being terrorists. This
would really make the audience shudder at the time of the film’s release.
