This is one of the final shots of the movie with Ana sailing
away with the remaining survivors to safety.
The fact Ana is blonde is very unusual for a horror movie’s
“final girl” for the blonde generally will be the female victim. However in
this film she survives on the boat. One of the reason she is the “final girl”
is she has her hair tied back, instead of hanging down like Monica’s hair
style.
Also in the shot is an American flag which connotes
patriotism and connate to the zeitgeist of 2004 and the importance of being
proud of your country.
This seem to be an open ending with a majority of the
survivor escaping although zombies are still around but they are saved however
this is a red herring as the credit roll the shot show them all
